Instrument Description

The remote load frame (RLF) is a custom Instron tensile testing machine used for characterizing the mechanical properties of irradiated specimens. With modifications to fixturing for in-cell use, the load frame can accommodate a multitude of geometries and tests. The furnace allows high-temperature testing, currently 50 KN range tensile tests, but can be used for a variety of test durations, temperatures, and soak cycles. The frame can apply force in both compressive and tension directions.


  • Currently utilized for 4-point-bend testing (50 N range) and high-temperature tensile testing (50 KN range).

  • Extra wide Instron 5800 series load frame with 50 KN capacity


  • 50 N, 250 N, 2 KN, and 50 KN load cells available

  • Calibration in-cell using proving ring or weights

  • Adjustable fixturing for 4-point bend testing

  • 3-zone controllable furnace with 7” I.D. x 12” height

  • TC interconnection box for temperature measurements that supports: 4 type R for furnace, 3 type K, 3 type E, 2 type N, and 2 type T thermocouples

  • Bluehill 2 operating and control software

  • Deflectometer and extensometer compatible
