Instrument Description

The casting furnace (CF) is a counter gravity injection, inductively heated furnace used to downblend and homogenize heavy metal ingots from the cathode processor and cast sample pins for analysis. It is installed in the Fuel Conditioning Facility (FCF) argon cell. The furnace is top loading and utilizes overhead handling equipment for loading and unloading.

Applications

The CF is used to perform the final downblending operation on Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II) used nuclear fuel product. It is also used to take samples of the product that is then sent to the Analytical Laboratory for analysis.
