Instrument Description

The Carbolite MTF 10/25/130 tube furnace inside of the fresh fuels glovebox (FFG) is used for sample heating, preparation and annealing studies. The furnace requires a 120VAC/400 watt input and can achieve temperatures of up to 1,000°C with a type-K thermocouple for control reference. The furnace has a single zone heated length of 5 in. with an inner diameter of 1 in. The samples heated inside of the furnace will typically range from 25 mg to 1 g, but may vary outside of this range if it is feasible and has been evaluated by management. The samples will consist of various isotopes, both radiological and nonradiological. Glass, quartz or stainless furnace tubes may be used within this furnace as necessary, as long as they are compatible with sample materials and temperatures at which the furnace will be run.

Applications

The tube furnace is used for annealing materials to a desired microstructure and conducting fuel cladding chemical interaction studies.
